Validity

Passports and Dutch identity cards are normally valid for five years. The precise date on which your travel document expires is indicated in the document itself. Once a travel document has expired you are not allowed to travel on it and it cannot be used as proof of identity.

A passport is valid in all countries. A Dutch identity card is valid in certain European countries.

Some countries lay down additional or differing requirements regarding the validity of travel documents: they may require a visa, for example, or require travel documents to be valid for a certain period (e.g. six months) on entering or leaving the country. Some countries do not recognize children listed in parents' or legal guardians' passports and require them to have their own passports.
It is advisable to ask a travel agency, or the embassy or consulate in the country you wish to visit, in plenty of time about the admission requirements and what documents you need.

Non-standard expiry date

There are cases where the validity of a document is less than five years.
If you apply for a 'second passport' it will be issued with a validity of two years.
Travel documents for aliens and refugees are issued for the validity of their residence permits, in which case they may be valid for less than five years.

An emergency passport is only valid for the journey for which it was issued and during that journey (which may not last more than one year). It must be handed in immediately after the journey:

  • In the Netherlands: to the municipality where you are registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA).

  • In the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba: at the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Population and Elections or the Office of the Governor.

  • Elsewhere: at the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you are resident or staying.

Please note: The emergency extension facility for passports was discontinued on 26 August 2006.
